Visit Morocco’s argan oil cooperatives — a genuinely educational experience that supports local Berber women and produces one of the world’s most valuable oils. Argan trees grow only in the Souss-Massa region of southwestern Morocco — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — and the extraction of argan oil by hand is still performed almost entirely by Berber women’s cooperatives. A cooperative visit typically includes a demonstration of the complete process: cracking the shells by hand, grinding the kernels on stone millstones, and separating the oil. You can taste culinary argan oil (nutty, rich, extraordinary on bread or salads) and cosmetic argan oil products. Located along the Tizi n’Tichka road between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, and throughout the Souss valley.
