The Todra Gorge and Dadès Valley form one of Morocco’s most spectacular geological corridors — a dramatic pair of river-carved canyons cutting through the High Atlas Mountains, connecting the Sahara desert plateaus to the south with the mountain ridgelines to the north, along a route known as the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.” The Todra Gorge (Gorges du Todra) is the most dramatic canyon in Morocco — a slot canyon barely 10 meters wide at its narrowest point, where sheer limestone walls soar 300 meters overhead, their red-orange surfaces streaked with desert varnish and catching extraordinary light at midday when the sun penetrates directly to the canyon floor. The Todra River, flowing crystal-clear and ice-cold even in summer, runs along the canyon floor between polished boulders, while local women wash laundry in the traditional way and children splash in the shallows. Rock climbers from across Europe and North America come specifically to climb the Todra’s vertical walls — over 150 documented routes from beginner to extreme. The Dadès Valley, stretching 100 kilometers east of Ouarzazate, is perhaps Morocco’s most scenic drive — a winding road following the Dadès River through a continuous succession of red-rock landscapes, ancient kasbahs, Berber village clusters, almond and apple orchards, and the astonishing Monkey Fingers rock formations near Aït Oudinar. The valley’s famous kasbah ruins reflect dramatically in the river at dusk. Between the two gorges, the route passes through Boumalne Dadès — a market town and excellent base — and the rose-growing region of Kelaat M’Gouna (Roses Valley), which produces much of the world’s rose water and rose oil. Every May, the Valley of Roses Festival celebrates the harvest with music, dance, and the election of a Rose Queen. Top experiences: Todra Gorge canyon walk | Rock climbing | Dadès Valley kasbah drive | Monkey Fingers rock formations | Rose Valley in bloom (April–May) | Berber village walks | Night in a valley riad | Road of a Thousand Kasbahs circuit. Best time to visit: March–May and September–November. Spring brings rose blooms and green valleys.
