Ifrane — Morocco’s Little Switzerland — is one of the most unexpected and charming destinations in North Africa: a pristine alpine town of red-roofed chalets, manicured parks, and crystal-clear mountain air sitting at 1,665 meters altitude in the heart of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Built by the French Protectorate administration in 1929 as a cool-season retreat, Ifrane retains its European alpine character almost entirely intact: wide tree-lined boulevards, Swiss-chalet style villas with steep red-tiled roofs, carefully tended flower gardens, and a town center that looks more like a village in the Alps than a Moroccan city. It is consistently ranked Morocco’s cleanest city and is home to Al Akhawayn University — one of Africa’s finest English-language universities, founded in 1995. The surrounding Middle Atlas cedar forest is one of Morocco’s greatest natural treasures. Ancient Atlas cedar trees (Cedrus atlantica) — some over 800 years old, reaching 40 meters high — shelter the world’s largest surviving population of wild Barbary macaque monkeys (Macaca sylvanus). Entirely habituated to human presence, these charismatic primates can be observed and photographed at extremely close range in the Azrou Cedar Forest (15km from Ifrane) — an experience that delights children and adults alike. In winter (December–March), Ifrane and the nearby Michlifen ski resort receive substantial snowfall, transforming the Middle Atlas into a winter wonderland and offering Morocco’s best skiing — entirely unexpected for visitors who associate Morocco only with desert landscapes. The Ifrane National Park (125,000 hectares) protects extraordinary biodiversity: cedar and oak forests, volcanic crater lakes (Aguelmam Azigza, Aguelmam Sidi Ali), populations of North African otters, golden jackals, wild boar, and over 150 bird species including the rare Atlas flycatcher. Top experiences: Barbary macaque encounter in Azrou cedar forest | Michlifen ski resort (winter) | Ifrane National Park hiking | Lake Aguelmam Azigza | Ifrane town architecture walk | Waterfall of Oum er-Rbia source | Day trip base for Fès and Meknès circuits. Best time to visit: Spring (April–June) for wildflowers and green forests; Winter (Dec–Feb) for snow and skiing. Altitude: 1,665m.
