Taroudant — the “Grandmother of Marrakech” — is one of Morocco’s best-kept secrets: a perfectly intact walled city set in the lush Souss plain, surrounded by snow-capped Atlas peaks to the north and Anti-Atlas mountains to the south, just 80 kilometers east of Agadir. Taroudant’s remarkable 16th-century ramparts, stretching 7.5 kilometers and pierced by five monumental gates, are among the finest and most complete in Morocco — even more intact than those of Marrakech. Walking or cycling along the top of these walls at sunset, with views over the ochre medina rooftops to the High Atlas snowfields, is one of Morocco’s most beautiful experiences. Inside the walls, Taroudant’s medina is compact, authentic, and almost entirely tourist-free — a rarity in Morocco. Two excellent souks — the Arab Souk and the Berber Market — offer exceptional crafts without the pressure selling of Marrakech: silver Amazigh jewelry, hand-stitched leather goods, Souss honey, argan oil directly from cooperatives, saffron from nearby Taliouine, and hand-woven blankets in bold Berber geometric patterns. The surrounding Souss Valley is Morocco’s most productive agricultural region: orange and lemon groves, almond orchards, olive trees, and the iconic argan tree — found nowhere else on earth — stretch in every direction. The Taliouine saffron region, 100 kilometers to the east, produces some of the world’s finest saffron, harvested each October in a golden-flowered spectacle. Top experiences: Evening walk on the ramparts | Arab Souk and Berber Market | Silver Amazigh jewelry | Argan cooperative visits | Day trip to Taliouine saffron fields (October) | Anti-Atlas mountain exploration | Cycling around the city walls | Base for western High Atlas trekking. Location: 80km east of Agadir | Best time: October–April | Altitude: 275m.
