Explore Morocco’s extraordinary kasbah trail — the chain of fortified mud-brick palaces, granaries and garrison towns that stretches from the High Atlas foothills through the Draa Valley and deep into the pre-Saharan south. The greatest kasbahs include Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO), the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate, the Kasbah Telouet, the Kasbah Amridil in Skoura, and the Kasbah de Tifoultoute. Each kasbah tells a different story: of Glaoui lords, trans-Saharan caravan traders, Alaouite sultans and Berber chiefs. The distinctive pisé architecture — rammed earth walls with carved geometric towers — is unique to Morocco and deserves far more attention than it typically receives from travellers focused only on the imperial cities.
