Chefchaouen — the Blue Pearl of Morocco — is one of the most visually striking cities in the world. Built in 1471 by Moorish and Jewish refugees expelled from Spain, its medina streets are painted in every shade of blue — from pale powder to deep cobalt to indigo — creating a photographic dreamscape that has made it one of Morocco’s most shared images on social media. But Chefchaouen is far more than its colour. The medina is intimate and navigable, the pace unhurried, and the surrounding Rif Mountains offer excellent hiking to the Akchour waterfalls and the Bridge of God rock arch. The main square, Place Outa el-Hammam, has a striking kasbah and outdoor cafés perfect for watching the world slow down. Cedar forests 20 minutes from town shelter wild Barbary macaques. Chefchaouen is 3 hours from Fès, 4 hours from Rabat and 2 hours from Tangier — naturally combining with a northern Morocco or imperial cities itinerary.
