Stargaze in the Sahara desert near Merzouga — one of the darkest skies in the northern hemisphere and one of the best places on earth to observe the Milky Way with the naked eye. The Erg Chebbi dunes are far from any significant light pollution, and the desert atmosphere is exceptionally clear and dry. From a Berber camp at night, the sky is so dense with stars it appears almost three-dimensional. Guided stargazing sessions with telescopes are available at some camps. The best period runs from October to March when temperatures are comfortable and the sky is at its clearest. An experience that consistently ranks among the most memorable moments travellers report from their Morocco journey.
