Aït Ben Haddou is Morocco’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage site — a fortified ksar of mud-brick towers, grain stores, communal spaces and a 900-year-old mosque rising dramatically from the valley floor south of the High Atlas. It has appeared in more films than almost any location on earth: Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Babel, Kingdom of Heaven and dozens more. A guided walk through the full kasbah takes about 90 minutes and reveals extraordinary views from the summit granary. The village across the river still has permanent residents. Located 32km north of Ouarzazate, it is an essential stop on any southern Morocco itinerary.
